It’s not long now before I take over the reins for a week on the Twitter account @FarmersOfTheUK .

The account was started back in January, has featured a different farmer every week, and has now accumulated nearly 11,000 followers. Quite something.

It has been the brainchild of social media expert and @AgrichatUK host Simon Haley whose vision was simply to give the general public an insight into farming behind the farm gate, and one that is real, honest and emotive.

It’s quite addictive, even as farmers ourselves.  We get a closer look at other farmers’ enterprises in bite-sized chunks, make new connections, and by the end of the week, when the farmer has shared his daily workload with you, you feel you know them really quite well.

It's fantastic to see how engaged the british public are with @farmersintheuk, what a great advertisement for British farming. This freah approach to giving more people more knowledge about British farming and its challenges, can only be a good thing.

So it’s over to Hare Farm from Monday 1st December - Sunday 7th December. I’ll be tweeting about all areas of the farm, including the core enterprise of sheep farming, our role as guardians of the landscape, through to the farm diversification projects of self-catering holidays and renewables.

Why not take a look yourselves at the @farmersoftheuk account on Twitter. The majority of followers are those without a farming background. There’s also a few celebrities, including Julia Bradbury and Dermot O’Leary!
