Rye's Mapp and Lucia on BBC1 Tonight!

Back in the summer a film crew spent several weeks based in Rye, East Sussex, filming the BBC1 adaptation of Mapp and Lucia. It finally hits our screens this evening.

You may summise Rye was lucky to be chosen as the base for the latest adaptation of EF Benson's novel, but in fact it was quite rightly the only choice. Benson once lived at Lamb House in Rye, now owned by the National Trust, and it was here which inspired Benson's writing back in the 1920s and 1930s. And it is at Lamb House where much of the drama unfolds.

Mapp and Lucia in Rye

There has been fantastic reviews of the previews shown recently to the media. Radio Times applaud the picturesque Rye, and Anna Chancellor who plays Lucia tells Jade Bremner it was like being "in a ready made studio".  The Guardian's Nina Stibbe declares "it's marvellous" and we should plan our week around the series of three one-hour episodes. I certainly will be.

We often say how fortunate we are to live so close to Rye. Being locals, Rye offers all that we need from a local town, but it also offers so much more for locals and tourists alike. For the first or the thousandth time of seeing, we all savour and respect the picturesque streets and buildings, dating back to mediaeval times, set on a hill overlooking the Romney Marsh and the sea.

Hare Farm Oast is just a ten minute drive from Rye, East Sussex. Along with the shepherd's hut, Hare Farm sleeps 12-14 in self catering accommodation for large groups and couples. The farm is ideally placed for enjoying all that 1066 Country offers, but let's celebrate Rye for now, which righly sits on its own high pedestal having been the base of the much-awaited BBC1 drama, Mapp and Lucia.

I don't think I'll be alone in soon re-tracing the steps of those taken by Miranda Richardson, Anna Chancellor, Steve Pemberton and Mark Gatiss in various houses and streets of Rye, and who are set to amuse us from our sofas this evening and beyond. The excitement builds...

Make a date for Mapp and Lucia, BBC1 tonight, 30th and 31st December.
