Mystery Solved

Over the past eighteen months a mysterious yelping noise has been coming from below the oast house in Marquee field.

The sounds have drifted up to the farmhouse and oast almost daily and at similar times.

Regular ‘reckies’ have been made to discover what the creature could be behind the calls – but to no avail, as they cease as quickly as they start.

However, Stuart has now solved the riddle!

He has been working in the sheep handling pens grading and sorting lambs, when yesterday the call suddenly came from the large oak tree approximately ten feet away – and on looking up into the branches he came eyeball to eyeball with a Little Owl.

On doing some research, we discovered that they make a variety of different sounds, the main ones being the Contact call, Alarm call, Male territorial call and the Disturbed call .We had been hearing two – the Contact call and the Alarm call.

Discussions over lunch now consist of how Stuart and the Little Owl have been bonding using the ‘contact call’ – I’m not sure how much sheep work is getting done! – but we feel very privileged  now to have Little Owls as well as our Barn Owls here at Hare Farm.
