Summer Coats On

Shearing is now complete for this year.

We contracted in the shearing gang of M&J Cutting where Jo and Sam were the shearers and they were supported by a wool handler or rousie.

Stuart and Tommy, ably supported by the collies Meg and Tiggy, were responsible for gathering in the sheep to the shearing pens, and to keep the shearers busy all day. Whilst the sheep and lambs were in the pens,  Stuart was also able to drench, foot trim and sort out any other husbandry needs. Annie was a welcome sight at lunch time with food and drink supplies, and the children Edward and Jessie stepped in on the final day, Saturday, to bring fresh legs and enthusiasm to the team.

Shearing runs smoothly when the weather holds overhead, when the sheep are in good condition, and when the team is fit and able. Ticks go in all those boxes. We can now be safe in the knowledge that another big job in the shepherding calendar is behind us. And the ewes can now enjoy Summer with less to carry on their backs, and their summer coats on.
